Microdosing and driving

Microdosing and driving is a sensitive topic. Even if someone experiences a microdose as subtle, their attention, perception, mood, or reaction time may differ from normal. Caution is especially essential when driving or operating machinery.

Microdosing and driving: what are the risks?

Microdosing has garnered a lot of attention in recent years. People often mention benefits such as focus, creativity, calmness, and self-reflection. However, when it comes to driving or operating machinery, the focus shifts to something else entirely: safety, alertness, and responsibility.

Psychedelics contain substances that can affect perception, mood, attention, and reaction time. Even if a microdose feels subtle, you may react differently than usual. This can include moments of reduced alertness, absent-mindedness, distraction, or slower reaction times. These are precisely the factors that are critical when driving a car, riding a motorcycle, or operating machinery.

For this reason, we advise against driving on microdosing days. This is especially true for people who have little or no experience with how they react to microdosing, but also applies to anyone who notices that their attention, perception, mood, or reaction time are different from usual.

Safety is our top priority. Do not drive if you are under the influence or unable to react quickly and clearly.

What does the law say about microdosing and driving?

In the Netherlands, you are not allowed to drive if you are under the influence of drugs or other substances that could impair your ability to drive. This also applies to microdosing.

Even if you aren’t randomly pulled over for a spot check for LSD, psilocybin, or other psychedelics, the situation can change if you exhibit erratic driving, are stopped for a traffic check, or are involved in an accident. Especially after a serious incident, authorities may investigate whether substance use played a role. This can have legal and practical consequences, even if you felt that you were still functioning normally.

If a driver is suspected of driving under the influence, the police may conduct various tests. These may include a saliva test, an assessment of psychomotor functions, and an evaluation of eye and speech functions. If a test or observation warrants further investigation, a blood test may be performed. The blood sample is then analyzed by a laboratory that meets legal requirements.

Our advice is therefore simple: do not drive if you are under the influence or if you notice that your attention, perception, mood, or reaction time are different from usual. This applies not only to driving a car, but also to riding a motorcycle, cycling in heavy traffic, and operating machinery.
